Convert between miles per gallon (MPG), liters per 100 kilometers (L/100km), and kilometers per liter (km/L). Compare fuel efficiency across US, UK, and international vehicle ratings โ and understand real driving cost differences.
Fuel economy is expressed differently worldwide. The US uses miles per gallon (MPG). Most of the world uses liters per 100 kilometers (L/100km). Some countries use km/L. The UK uses MPG but with the larger Imperial gallon โ causing confusion when comparing car specs internationally.
A higher MPG means MORE efficient (more miles per gallon of fuel). A LOWER L/100km means MORE efficient (less fuel per 100 km). They are inversely related: doubling MPG halves L/100km. Formula: L/100km = 235.215 / US MPG.
US gallon = 3.785 liters. UK (Imperial) gallon = 4.546 liters. UK MPG x 0.8327 = US MPG. A car rated 40 UK MPG = 33.3 US MPG = 7.06 L/100km. Never compare UK and US MPG directly without conversion.
