Calculate exactly what score you need on your final exam to achieve your target course grade. Enter your current grade, final exam weight, and desired grade to get the minimum score needed โ and find out if your target grade is still achievable.
This is the most-asked question at the end of every semester: "What do I need on the final to get a B?" Our calculator answers it instantly and also tells you if your goal is still mathematically possible given your current grade.
If this calculator shows you need more than 100% on the final, your target grade is mathematically impossible given your current grade. You have two options: lower your target grade to something still achievable, or check whether extra credit opportunities are available. Sometimes professors offer makeup assignments or curve the final โ ask your instructor.
| Scenario | Target | Final Score Needed |
|---|---|---|
| 95% current, 40% final | B (80%) needed | 58.3% on final |
| 80% current, 30% final | A (93%) needed | 128.6% โ impossible |
| 75% current, 40% final | C (73%) needed | 69.2% on final |
| 65% current, 50% final | D (60%) needed | 55% on final |
| 88% current, 25% final | A- (90%) needed | 94.7% on final |
Your target grade becomes impossible when: Required Score = (Target - Current ร (1 - Final Weight)) / Final Weight > 100. This happens when your current grade is too far below your target for even a perfect final to bridge the gap. A student with 60% current grade needing 90% overall with a 40% final needs: (90 - 60ร0.6)/0.4 = (90 - 36)/0.4 = 135% โ impossible.
Study strategies: create a study schedule starting 2 weeks before, focus on high-weighted topics and common exam formats, review all previous exams and quizzes for patterns, form or join study groups, visit professor during office hours to ask about exam focus areas, use spaced repetition for memorization, and simulate exam conditions during practice sessions.
