Break Even Calculator
Calculate your break even point in units sold and total sales revenue. Understand how many products you must sell before your business starts generating profit, and find your margin of safety above the break even point.
The break even point is the sales volume at which total revenue equals total costs โ zero profit, zero loss. Every unit sold above break even generates pure profit equal to the contribution margin. Knowing your break even point is fundamental to pricing strategy, production planning, and understanding business risk.
Formula
Break Even Units = Fixed Costs / (Price per Unit - Variable Cost per Unit) | Break Even Revenue = Fixed Costs / Contribution Margin Ratio | CM Ratio = (Price - Variable Cost) / Price
Break Even Analysis Guide
Break even analysis identifies the exact sales volume where a business covers all its costs with no profit or loss. It is essential for pricing decisions, production planning, and evaluating business viability before launch or expansion.

Contribution Margin
Contribution Margin (CM) = Selling Price - Variable Cost per Unit. This is the amount each unit contributes toward covering fixed costs and then generating profit. CM Ratio = CM / Price. A product priced at $50 with $20 variable cost has CM = $30 and CM Ratio = 60%. This means 60 cents of every dollar in revenue goes toward covering fixed costs and profit.
Margin of Safety
Margin of Safety = Actual Sales - Break Even Sales. This measures how far sales can fall before you start losing money. Express as a percentage: MoS% = (Actual - Break Even) / Actual ร 100. A 30% margin of safety means sales can drop 30% before the business loses money. Healthy businesses target 25-40% margin of safety to withstand revenue fluctuations.
Frequently Asked Questions
Break Even Units = Fixed Costs / Contribution Margin per Unit. Contribution Margin = Selling Price - Variable Cost per Unit. Example: Fixed costs $50,000/month, selling price $100, variable cost $40 per unit. CM = $60. Break Even = $50,000 / $60 = 833 units per month. Must sell 834+ units to be profitable.
Contribution Margin (CM) = Revenue - Variable Costs. It represents the amount available to cover fixed costs and generate profit. CM per unit = Price - Variable Cost. CM Ratio = CM / Price. A business with higher CM ratio reaches break even faster and generates more profit per dollar of revenue beyond break even. Improving CM is often more impactful than reducing fixed costs.
After break even, every additional unit sold generates profit equal to the contribution margin per unit. If CM = $30 per unit and you sell 100 units above break even: profit = $3,000. This is why businesses with high fixed costs (tech, manufacturing) become very profitable once they scale โ the incremental cost of each additional unit is low.
Three strategies: 1) Increase selling price (raises CM directly โ most powerful if demand is inelastic). 2) Reduce variable costs (raw material negotiation, production efficiency). 3) Reduce fixed costs (lean operations, sublease excess space, reduce overhead). Each approach has tradeoffs โ price increases may reduce volume, cost cuts may affect quality.
There is no universal standard โ it depends on your industry and business model. The key questions: Can you realistically achieve break even volume given your market? What is your timeline to break even? Startups typically expect 6-24 months to break even. Service businesses with low fixed costs can break even quickly. Capital-intensive manufacturing may take years. Calculate months to break even by dividing monthly fixed costs by monthly contribution margin.
Work backwards from a target profit: Target Revenue = (Fixed Costs + Target Profit) / CM Ratio. If you need $100,000 profit with $50,000 fixed costs and 40% CM ratio: needed revenue = ($50,000 + $100,000) / 0.40 = $375,000. Then check if that revenue is achievable at your price point. Alternatively, test different price points to see how break even changes.
